Sometimes, bigger really is better. A full-size SUV with an expansive cabin, cavernous cargo area, and prodigious performance, the Ford Expedition is built to carry everything your day has in store. While the standard Expedition is large enough for most needs, Ford offers a long-wheelbase variant for families seeking even roomier accommodations, the Expedition MAX.
While the Expedition and Expedition MAX are mostly similar, they offer attributes that make them suitable for different needs. To help you determine the right fit for your needs and lifestyle, here's a look at their distinguishing characteristics.
Size and Dimensions
The primary differentiator between the Expedition and Expedition MAX is their size. While both are ~80 inches wide and ~76.5 inches tall, the Expedition MAX is just shy of a foot longer (210 vs. 221.9 inches long). Passenger space remains the same; however, the Expedition Max's extra length results in significantly more cargo space.
The standard Expedition provides 20.9 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 63.6 cubic feet with the third row folded. When you need more space for an errand or adventure, you can fold all rear seats to reveal 104.6 cubic feet. While these are impressive numbers, the Expedition MAX takes it to the next level with 36 cubic feet behind the third row, 79.6 behind the second, and 121.4 behind the first.
Even if you don't utilize the maximum capacity, the Expedition MAX provides more cargo-carrying capacity while retaining three rows of seatbelts.
Trim Levels
The standard Ford Expedition is available in six trim levels, including Timberline. This ruggedized model improves off-road prospects with a heavy-duty radiator, all-terrain tires, off-road suspension, an electronic limited-slip differential, and a high-output twin-turbo EcoBoost® V-6 (440 hp, 510 lb-ft). The Expedition also offers a base XL trim with two-row, five-person seating.
The Ford Expedition MAX is offered in four trims: XLT, Limited King Ranch, and Platinum.
Performance
Both Expedition variants come standard with a potent 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost® V-6 with 375 horsepower, 470 pound-feet of torque, and a 10-speed automatic transmission. King Ranch and Platinum models boost performance to 400 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. A high-output version (440 hp, 510 lb-ft) is available to both models via the Stealth Performance Package; however, the standard Expedition can also get this engine standard in the Timberline trim.
The Expedition MAX has a slightly higher standard towing capacity (6,300 vs. 6,000 pounds). However, the advantage flips when with the optional Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package. Properly equipped, the Ford Expedition can tow up to 9,300 pounds, while the Expedition MAX tops out at 9,000 pounds.
Cost
The Ford Expedition XLT has a starting MSRP of $59,790. The Expedition MAX XLT starts at $62,790.
